In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His being was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to care for his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his wards inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer here tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plot.

Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.

One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
